Inquiring Minds Want to Annoy, erm, Know

"Mommy, what'er you doing?"
"Blogging."
"Why?"
"Because it's Monday and it's my turn."
"Why?"
"Because we all take turns."
"Why?"
"Because the earth is round, the sky is blue and my patience is wearing thin."
"Why?"
ARGH!!!!!!!

Even though this is my second child, I did not have the Why phase with my first. Now, as of yesterday, I'm grateful for missing it the first time around because we've officially entered the Why-Plight Zone (insert Twilight Zone theme music). Aptly called plight as it's defined as "a situation from which extrication is difficult especially an unpleasant trying one." I'm torn between answering the question, ignoring her all together and giving some smart-ass answer. She doesn't care what the answer is anyway. Perhaps I can finally put all of the useless information, floating around in my head, to good use. Other than the People crossword puzzlers, that is.

"Mommy, what'er you doing?"
"Wondering why Jennifer Aniston is always on the best dressed list."
"Why?"
"Because I swear all she owns is black, safe, clothing."
"Why?"
"Because she's obviously trying to appear less flashy than Angelina."
"Why?"
"Well, after her and Brad split, I think she was trying to remain low-key."
"Why?"
"Because I would if my marriage had ended so publicly."
"Oh."

At least, I imagine that eventually she'll tire of too much information, especially the more-than-anyone-needs-to-know-about-Hollywood tidbits. Or maybe not, but two can play this awful game. What is it with this phase anyway? We've already established that the answer isn't important, so why the whys? To establish early on that your kids aren't really listening to you when you tell them why? So that parental inadequacies feel more commonplace? To drive us completely bonkers? Or so, that given your 20/20 hindsight, you'll long for these days once your kids are teenagers. Probably the latter, huh?

In any event, I'm hoping this isn't a long phase as I'm still waiting for her to grow out of her I'll-only-go-to-Mommy-Chapter that we've been in for the last year. Yeah, she won't be glommed onto Daddy with the why's, that will, unfortunately, be deferred to moi. Why, oh why, oh why?! Dagnabit.

  1. OK...turn on the Twilight Zone music...weird coincidence coming. Amelia has decided to hit the "why" phase...just recently. I've been trying to hit it from the logical angle and actually try to explain the "why" behind her questions...that is until I realize that it's a futile exercise because no matter how sound of a reason I provide, there is still always more whys to come....ARGH.

  2. Oh Holly, your snark never fails to make me happy :)

Annelie isn't at the why phase yet.... yet.

Gracie had it weird. All her why questions were made up. Such as "Why is a Tink blue? And whats a Tink?"

    ....?

    Such a headache.

  3. I like Jennifer Anniston's low-key style...some of those Hollywood types will do anything to get attention (ahem, Lady GaGa, put some pants on!) So I guess I'm saying, maybe she's on the best dressed lists by default?
