Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Banana?

Four year olds don't really have the greatest sense of humor. Don't get me wrong. Four year old's are funny. Very, very funny. But when it comes to telling jokes... their humor is a bit lacking by conventional standards.

Gracie is no exception. She has just discovered the joy of the 'knock, knock' joke, which, to be honest, I haven't heard told in a good 15 years... and I didn't miss them. Gracie's aren't the traditional knock, knock jokes we used to giggle over on the playground, though. They are of the four-year-old-who-doesn't-quite-get-the-idea-but-refuses-to-quit variety .

You know, like this:

Gracie: Knock, knock, who's there?
Me: [pause] Um... who's there?
Gracie: Orange banana.
Me: Orange banana who?
[Gracie laughs hysterically]

-and-

Gracie: Knock, knock, who's there?
Me [thinking I've got her joke-telling style figured out]: Who's there?
Gracie [hands on hips]: I already said 'who's there.'
Me [long pause]: Fine, just do the next part.
Gracie: Okay. Knock knock, who's there, my sister Annelie.
Me: Annelie who?
Gracie: Annelie Hopkins!
[Gracie laughs hysterically]

And they continue on and on, in the same fashion. And most of the time she repeats the same one over and over, until I have to pop 2 extra-strength Tylenol and beg for her to give me a minute for the meds to kick in.

But I'm not gonna lie; I love her knock, knock jokes. Though they are absolutely terrible and not at all funny, they just scream goofy little kid. It won't be long before her knock, knock jokes will actually make sense. And it won't be long before she thinks she is too cool for knock, knock jokes. And before I can even blink my eyes, she'll be saying herself that it has been 15 years since she told a knock, knock joke.

While these may feel like the longest days of my life, they all fly by so fast. So, while her sense of humor is currently absolutely dreadful, I can't help but enjoy the moments and giggle along with my four year old and her nonsensical knock, knock jokes - after the Tylenol has kicked in, of course.

xoxo,

  1. Well, my son's joke telling style is basically to shriek, make a funny face, then giggle hysterically. Good to know hi skills in that department won't improve much for at least three years!

  4. Amelia is all about the physical comedy right now. She will make goofy faces to make me laugh. I can't wait for her to try out jokes.

  6. Tyler is learning social skills at school and this is one of the things that they are trying to teach them (he is in a self-contained special ed class)...he is trying so hard too...he likes to put the punch line in the middle though and then stares at me when I don't laugh because I'm waiting for the punch line lol ... his favorite right now is "whats the difference between roast beef and pea soup?"

  8. Peri hasn't started with the Knock Knock jokes yet, but she does plenty of other things that make it necessary to stock up on Tylenol. :oP

  9. oh I'm so glad that its not just my kids who do this! Brayden makes up the most awful knock knock jokes, that are still cute but make absolutely no sense at all, and Gage just does the knock knock, who's there part over and over and over and over again.

    God bless Extra Strength Tylenol!!
