My Little Pony, Reborn (Again)

(Image compliments of The Hub)

Someone (that would be my husband) once said, one of the reasons I had kids was to give me a legitimate reason to watch cartoons without being embarrassed.  He was wrong.  #1, I never needed a reason to watch cartoons (or to have kids for that matter) and more importantly, #2 I've never been embarrassed about being an adult who likes to watch cartoons.  Having kids simply gave me more opportunities to watch cartoons.   Sure, as much as possible, I tried to have an influence over which cartoons they watch, not because I needed a way to covertly watch along with them.  No, if I could get them to watch the shows I liked, then I wouldn't have to fight over the TV.  "But Mommy wants to watch Scooby Doo, not Dora!"  You get the picture.

Hmm, maybe I need to take that back.  Once upon a time, I was a little worried about my "cool factor" and how watching cartoons might hurt my "cred".  When I hit high school, I had to keep my cartoon obsession on the down low.  By the time My Little Pony, the animated series, came to TV, I was way "to cool" to watch it (though, it seems, not too cool to secretly watch Jem and the Holograms when no one was around).  As I mentioned once before, having SweetPea gave me the "in" I needed to rediscover all the old My Little Pony cartoons...and the newer ones too.  As much as she's into My Little Pony, you'd think I would have heard that a new incarnation was about to hit TV.  I had no idea.

As I was in a half coma trying to find something for us to watch early (like, 6:00 am early) this past Sunday morning, imagine my surprise when I discovered that a new cable station had been created where Discovery Kids used to be and that a new My Little Pony series was on.  WOO HOO...or...wait a minute...what's this?  Kind of a little "Japanimated" for my taste.  OK, and wait, isn't that Rainbow Dash?  Why is she a Pegasus pony now?  And they're calling that Pony Rarity, but she's not even pink like the pretty unicorn pony that SweetPea has sitting in her room.  What's with Pinkie Pie and why does she act like she needs a heavy dose of Ritalin?  Within about five minutes I'd begun to question whether I was going to like this latest incarnation, but I wasn't about to turn it.  Not that they kids would have let me (Lil Buddy digs the Ponies too, in case you wondered).  A funny thing happened though.  Once I got over my hangups over the changes they made (which, by the way, led to question after question from SweetPea about why they made the Ponies she knows different), I actually found myself getting into it...and eventually having the new show grow on me.  OK, so it does feel something like Powerpuff Girls meets MLP, but it's...well...entertaining.  It's quirky but still cute without being as sweet as syrup as it used to be.  Time will tell if we keep watching.  HAHAHAHAHAHA...yeah right...like we're going to stop!  Or make that, like I'm going to stop.

Anyway, if you dig the Ponies, check out My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic on The Hub.  Let me know what you think.  Oh and classic MLP cartoon fans...Spike makes his return.  Check it out!

  2. Hahaha! Yet another thing we have in common. I've been known to "engage in a cartoon" or two or three, but I'm pretty particular about 'em. Hmmmm...maybe I'll check it out when Ladybug's at school. I'd hate to get her hooked on something I can't stand.

  3. Lauren Faust, the creator of the new My Little Pony Friendship is Magic series, also did Johnny Bravo, AND the Powerpuff Girls.

So yes.. you definitely see some of her work in there. :D

  4. Awesome! I was wondering what show to start after the Andy Yeatman shows. My kids are bored now and they miss his shows a lot but since he isn’t working with Netflix anymore, it is difficult to look for more of his shows. This would be a good distraction for them.
