Dance Your Cares Away, Worry's for Another Day......

"Let the music play, down at Fraggle Rock!"

I don't know about you, but I'm a little disappointed in the kids' shows of today. Maybe not so much disappointed as bored, annoyed and downright appalled. Barney, Bratz or Pokemon anyone? Scary, scarier and just plain dumb. I let my kids watch OPB and I have to be sure to catch it and change the channel when that unmistakable purple dinosaur's theme song starts to play. Much to the protests of my four year old. I'm doing it for her own good. Really. I'm pretty sure it will stunt her growth and give her the impression that T-rex's are friendly when she should really run if she ever meets one.

I recently picked up a couple of shows, from the library, that I used to love as a kid. Right now, the girls are watching Fraggle Rock and they are both in love with Disney's Silly Symphonies; especially The Ugly Duckling. That's their favorite. While there are a few shows I do like for the kids (Sesame Street, Word World and Sid the Science Kid) most of them are pretty lame and don't compare to the "good ol' days." As a child, I loved Fraggle Rock, The Muppets, Silly Symphonies, Gummi Bears, Jem, Thundercats, Heathcliff, Ducktales, Today's Special and I could go on and on. :o)

If they're going to bring back Strawberry Shortcake and Transformers, bring back some of the other ones too. How cool would a re-tooled Jem and the Holograms or Thundercats be? I don't mean turning it into a movie with live action and thus taking away any childhood innocence (SeX-men). And just bring back Animaniacs as is; it was always fabulous. *sigh* My only hope is that they at least put all of the originals on DVDs so I can keep my kids away from those evil Bratz and have them wanting to be Cheetara and Jem instead. Thank goodness the library keeps "classics" in stock.

For your reminiscing pleasure....

One of the best theme songs ever. Woo hoooooo!

  3. Haha, this post cracked me up because I so don't agree with you. I hate all kids cartoons, even the ones from my childhood.

My girls have old school cartoons (their favorites are early-80's Care Bears and Rainbow Brite) on DVD and let me tell ya, what I remembered as being sooooo great when I was a kid... absolutely, positively SUCK. Way worse than Barney. Even worse than Dragon Tales (gasp!)

I guess I just hate all kids shows, no matter what. I'm the Grinch of kids cartoons. :)

  4. Oh, but I do have to say that Inspector Gadget has a fantastic theme... as does Duck Tales. I think Duck Tales was my favorite theme.

    DUCK TALES A-WOOOOO-OOOO

  6. I adore cartoons...of all sorts. I am definitely a huge fan of the oldies...and am very happy that The Cartoon Network invented the Boom channel where they show all the classic Hanna Barbera cartoons. Jem, yes, Animaniacs, yes, Fraggle Rock, yes, but there are some of the new ones I like too. I adore Charlie and Lola, Max and Ruby and Wow Wow Wubbzy. I like Ni Hao Kai Lan too. I'll be honest, if it's animated, I'll pretty much watch it, at least once!
